Testing the RunCam 3 by RCModelReviews

I rarely echo tests that I did not realize myself, but this review of RCModelReviews is very interesting: it concerns the RunCam 3 camera, which espouses the cube format of the GoPro Hero Session. Bruce Simpson, in preview, reviews all the positives and negatives with his delicious New Zealand accent, a nice work as for each of his videos.

What to remember

The positive points ? Good pricing, videos with a satisfactory dive, true-to-life colors and a WDR Dynamic Range (a kind of HDR), a GoPro Session format suitable for mini multi-rotors, a battery that offers 1 hour of d 'Autonomy, a solid lens protection in Gorilla glass. The negative points ? The camera "swallows" the microSD memory card if it is inserted incorrectly (and it is not easy to open), there is no (yet) application for smartphone, the sensitivity of the microphone is not Adjustable, and the battery is not removable. The entire test is to be found in Bruce Simpson's video ...

DJI Matrix 200, for professional missions

At the Mobile World Congress 2017 in Barcelona, DJI presented the Matrix 200, a drone destined to carry out professional missions. An impressive machine designed to accommodate equipment to conduct air inspections and data collection, including in harsh environments and when the weather is not cooperating. DJI for critical infrastructure inspections (bridges, telecommunication towers), inspections of energy-related installations (high voltage lines, wind turbines, oil platforms), site mapping and public safety ( Search & Rescue services, firefighters). Its dimensions? 71.6 x 22 x 23.6 cm for a weight of 3.80 kilos.

The equipment

The M200 is foldable for ease of transport and IP43 protection, ie protected against dust of more than 1 mm in diameter and against rainwater up to 60 ° from vertical. DJI has equipped it with more than 20 sensors for a redundancy of the components which makes it possible to improve the reliability, with double IMU, altimetric barometers, an electronic compass, a GPS system. Because it is capable of evolving in the presence of obstacles, it is equipped with two optical systems at the front and under the device, supplemented by an infrared sensor capable of detecting obstacles above it - an important tool for Facilitate flights under bridges, for example. It has two batteries that power the device in sequence for up to 38 minutes depending on the on-board load and battery type (a 95 Wh and a 174 Wh). At the front is a camera, as on the Inspire 2, which allows the pilot to fly in immersion. The M200 can be controlled by a driver, and its cameras operated by a camera equipped with a second radio control.

Inspection tools

"His" cameras? In addition to the front camera, the M200 can be equipped with an entry-level X4S camera, a 4x3 microphone X5S camera, a Z30 with mechanical zoom, or an XT that allows thermal imaging in conjunction with FLIR . The standard M200 is designed to carry a single camera, with a nacelle attachment on the underside of the camera. It is complemented by two other versions! The M210 is capable of accommodating two parallel nacelles under the aircraft, or a nacelle above. It can also be equipped with additional sensors and accessories developed by third-party manufacturers. Finally, the M210 RTK version is equipped with an RTK (Real Time Kinematic) module, which improves the satellite positioning to achieve a theoretical accuracy of the order of one centimeter.

Additional tools

All versions of the M200 are equipped with the AirSense DJI function, which is based on an ADS-B box. This system for receiving transponder signals makes it possible to obtain, in real time, the position, the altitude and the speed of apparatuses which evolve in the airspace. What to consider more serenely flights in an environment occupied by inhabited devices! Note that this is ADS-B reception, no transmission. The M200 is compatible with DJI GO 4 smartphone and tablet software, but it also takes advantage of the DJI Pilot application for industrial applications and DJI GS GO (GroundStation) to plan missions in a simple way. This is at least the promise of DJI, which also offers SDKs (development kits) for developers to realize their own software tools.

Collaborative!

DJI Pilot can work with DJI FlightHub, a real-time DJI data sharing tool to facilitate data sharing between field teams and management centers. This system allows all of them to visualize in real time the position of the aircraft in flight, their trajectory, their state, the video flow, to intervene on the flight plans and to pilot the cameras on board. For real-time image transmission up to a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels, the M200 relies on Lightbridge 2 with a range of up to 7 kilometers (depending on country and regulation).

3D propellers for Blade 200QX

We saw how to blade the firmware of the Blade 200QX of Horizon Hobby, what propellers make him shoe, there is more to try! An advice ? Even if you are used to piloting 3D helicopters, take your precautions to try the first flights back with the Blade 200QX. Either by taking a little height or by operating over a very thick lawn.

The reason ?

The reversal of the engines is working, but the small latency period during which the propellers no longer provide lift is sufficient to cause a loss of height. Dsc_0143-600And quickly. With a little training, it is possible to anticipate the change of rotation so that it takes place exactly in the middle of the turning. It is not obvious to give figures since everything happens very quickly, but let's say it is advisable to reverse the gases as soon as the 45 ° angle has passed. Easier said than done ! With the 3D propellers, the Blade 200QX becomes much more nervous. This is good news because it is ready to fly, but it is also a bit difficult to keep it at a height. It tends to go up or down. Not easy to manage ... especially when you are upside down.

For a beginner?

Dsc_0141-600Follow the back flight if you have never practiced this with a 3D helicopter, or if you have not consented to hours of training on a flight simulator (from a 3D helicopter). Nothing prevents you from experimenting, but you will quickly understand that the management of reverse orders is not improvised. Xavier de Faq-drone learned it at his expense. For the first flight back of the 200QX, I entrusted the orders to Fabien, from the Rosny Indoor Club. An excellent 3D driver that still had trouble taking its marks. For my part, the flights back over the grass were more or less conclusive - rather less than more. The aircraft ended up losing an engine, but it was with the intense satisfaction of having completed a full circle on the back. Ok, everyone is not Alan Szabo Jr nor Tareq Al Saadi ... You should also know that the battery does not last long in flight back, barely 4 minutes. This is not a surprise, Horizon Hobby had warned in its documentation ...

Foxeer Legend 3 on the way!

The pace of output of sports cameras accelerates! After the announcement of RunCam for a camera competing with the GoPro Hero5 Session, here is a new model announced by Foxeer in the format Keychain.

What do we know?

It is a 4K camera with Superview in 25 frames per second, in 2.5K at 60 frames per second (not bad!) And 1080p in 120 frames per second (yeaaah) and 1080p Superview in 60 frames per second (yeaaah bis ). Inside, there is an Ambarella A12 chip and a Sony IMX117. The case measures 6.5 x 4.25 x 2.3 cm with an Oled display and a removable battery. It will be offered in black and yellow livery. No price or availability date yet. And to say that I have not yet published the test of the Legend 2 ...

Spektrum Wireless Dongle WS1000

In order to progress in flight, the flight simulator is an interesting tool - even if it does not replace practice in reality. Imagine yourself in the living room, PC connected to the big screen TV to enjoy a nice picture with ... an endless thread to connect the radio control and the computer! The Wireless Dongle WS1000 from Spektrum promises to get rid of this thread. It is a receiver compatible with all radio controls that work with the DSM2 and DSMX protocols, to be plugged into the USB port of the computer that hosts your flight simulator. Compatibility with Windows PCs is mentioned, but not with Mac OS X. Radio controllers equipped with compatible Orange or RotorX modules and DevotionTX devoted Walkera Devo Radio Controllers should work with the module.

Compatibility?

It is supported by DRM (Drone Racing League) Simulator, LiftOff FPV Simulator, FPV Simulator, AeroFly RC Simulator, VMach Media FPV Event PE and VelociDrone FPV Racing Simulator. Either the best known and the most widespread. And probably others, we'll have to try them. With the help of an OTG USB cable, the adapter can also be plugged into an Android smartphone. The Absolute RC Plane Sim and FreeRider FPV software are compatible, but Horizon Hobby indicates that all those that can be used with a Gamepad are also compatible. The price ? The WS1000 is announced at $ 40 in the United States. No price indication in Europe at the moment.

FrSky XMR (mini) Review

To equip the nano racers, here is a new receiver 2.4 GHz of FrSky, compatible with the radio control in mode D16. It is smaller than the previous XMR and XMR +, as the F800, with dimensions of 1.5 x 1.4 x 0.34 cm. His weight ? 0.8 grams. It is to power in 3.5 to 10V, plugs in PWM for 6 channels. Its reach, says FrSky, is 300 meters. No telemetry on this model, but the Failsafe is present. His price ? It will be offered at less than 14 € at Banggood (with the port but without taxes).

Additionally, if you happen need to purchase some rc drone parts, you can search via Banggood website, which is one of the wholesale platform to provide affordable prices, such as tft lcd monitor, 5.8ghz fpv antenna, etc.

Tiny Whoop boosted: The BeeBrain and Insane engines

You might have read the test of Insane Motors from Micro Motor Warehouse installed on a Tiny Whoop. They give a nice fishing machine, but it trembles on all sides, making the flight very unpleasant. In the absence of the possibility of adjustments of the flight control, the solution is that is necessary ... it is to change flight controller! In the end, we get what? A nano machine to fly indoors with its protections of propellers, but powerful enough to fly also outdoors, with a little aerobatics ... The whole of the manipulation is very simple.

The proof ?

It's because I got there - and yet I'm not good at it. Just two soldering points is the most complicated step. Dsc_0009-1200I have opted for the NewBeeDrone BeeBrain v.1, a flight controller that measures pile-hair the same size as the Blade Inductrix. However, it relies on a Naze32 type electronics and Betaflight firmware rather than proprietary and non-adjustable Horizon Hobby software. It is proposed with an integrated receiver compatible with DMSX radios (Spektrum) or FrSky radios (like the Taranis). The video of some flights and a proposal of list of components can be found at the end of this post.

The base ?

Dsc_0114-1200The required to mount a Tiny Whoop Survived, is simply basic chassis of Inductrix. There are many other versions, plastic, 3D printing, aluminum ... No matter which one you choose, but the more the chassis is light the better it is. Shock resistance is not a fundamental criterion: all are repaired a number of times, then they must be changed when they are in too bad a condition. You can of course recycle an Inductrix from Horizon Hobby to give it a second life. Or an E10 from Eachine, to offer him a real life! That is the solution I have chosen. Simply adjust this step by step by removing the steps you do not need, especially by going directly to step 6 if you are starting from a bare chassis.

DJI Mavic Propeller Cage

Forget the simple propeller guards for the Mavic Pro, here are the Propellers Cages. These are grids that completely cover the propellers, for more effective protection. It will not avoid putting your fingers in it, nor to get a good lock of hair, but this accessory limits all the same well risks.

That said…

This makes it possible to fly in the presence of obstacles and to be able to touch them without the incident interrupting the flight. And in the audience? This reduces the risk, but be very careful about what the regulations say about it. The Propellers Cages for the Mavic Pro are available on the site of DJI to 179 € the 4 pieces, delivered to 3 pairs of propellers.

Eachine Aurora 90 preview

Why a simple preview of the Aurora 90? It is a complex multirotor, equipped with brushless motors, which requires time to be tested in depth. Many of you were asking me if the device was worth it. I opted for a preview, sufficient to get a good idea of the qualities and defects of the machine. Note that the device was given to us by the Banggood shop. As usual, tell us if you think the practice has influenced our judgment.

Tour of the owner

The Aurora 90 looks like a Tiny Whoop, with quadruple propellers and duct-like propeller shields. But it is more imposing: as the name suggests, it measures 9 cm diagonally of motor motor, and is inscribed in a square of 11,8 x 11,8 cm. It measures 7.5 cm in height without its battery. For comparison, a Tiny Whoop is 6.5 cm diagonal and 8.3 cm side. The weight is quite high: 74.5 grams without the battery, which adds 31.87 grams, for a total flight order of 106, 37 grams. The engines are 1104 to 7500KV. The propellers are 5.1 cm models, or 2 inches, secured with 2 screws. Our previous experience with a nano brushless, the Eachine's X73S, had not been conclusive. The Aurora 90 inspires a lot more confidence, with a carbon structure 2 mm thick that looks quite solid, protective carbon propellers, and a central pod that holds and protects the combo camera and video transmitter 5.8 GHz . Inside the aircraft, there is a Betaflight 3.1 flashed flight controller, a 2.4 GHz radio receiver and a 4x10A EOS 4 in 1 compatible Oneshot42, Oneshot125, Multishot and DShot600 compatible BLheli_S. At the back is a bar of 4 LEDs. It has everything of a great!

Connection under Betaflight

The version I tested is equipped with a Flysky radio receiver. To pair the Aurora 90 with an FS-i6, the procedure is conventional and fast, via the AFHDS 2A protocol. Good news: this means that this multi-rotor Flysky version is compatible with more high-end radio controls than the FS-i6. To connect it to a desktop computer with Chrome Betaflight Configurator, simply plug in a microUSB cable. But we soon realize that it is not going to be as simple as expected. The microUSB connector is present on the outside of the flight controller, but its access is totally blocked by the propeller shields! What has to be done ? Unscrew at least 2 screws of the front-left protection ... What is not simple: the threads are in the axis of the propellers, and therefore difficult to access even with a long and thin screwdriver.

Connection under Betaflight, continued

The flight controller of the Aurora 90 responds well under Betaflight. No worries to match the channels to the joysticks, to configure two switches to arm the motors and choose the modes. But unless armed with the joystick, it lacks a channel on the FS-i6 to trigger the buzzer. Because yes, there is a buzzer on board, and it is very appreciable. Direction the OSD tab: you can choose what you want to see on the screen during the flight. Battery voltage, artificial horizon, center cross, flight time, flight mode, pilot name, etc. Friendly! Note that the driver name changes on the Configuration tab. Not all values are available. No GPS, of course, nor altitude without adequate sensors. Also not displaying the video channel ...

Ignition…

The battery supplied with the Aurora 90 is a Lipo 2S 7.4V 450 mAh and a discharge rate of 80C, with a red JST plug. One can doubt the reality of 80C, especially with this hold. The battery is fixed under the device, with a small Velcro. Not really practical, she tends to save herself. As soon as the connection is made, the bar lights up, with high brightness. Friendly! It is plugged in with a small connector, and therefore easy to disconnect. First take-off: the Aurora 90 is quite noisy, but it is very nervous, even in Angle (stabilized) mode. Indoors, pushing the gas has every chance to stick the machine to the ceiling! It will be necessary to play on the spleens to calm the beast if you want to practice the precision flights in indoor.

Additionally, if you happen need to purchase some rc drone parts, you can search via Banggood website, which is one of the wholesale platform to provide affordable prices, such as fs gt3b, flysky transmitter and receiver, etc.

Hoverbot Nano Review

In the series of small brushless nano multirotors, here is the Hoverbot Nano. It is a 9 cm diagonal model, motor-driven, in X, and equipped with protections of propellers to facilitate the flights inside. The structure is made of carbon of 2 mmm, a weight of 5.6 grams without protections, 11.7 grams with. Hoverbot offers a lifetime warranty on all carbon parts. Nice, even if the costs of shipping from the United States to France temper a little the interest of the approach. This frame is sold for $ 45 at Hoverbot (without postage, without taxes). It comes with carbon parts, screws, rubber bands, a non-slip pad and a JST connector for power supply. If you need to print a video combo support, Hoverbot offers a 3D model on Thingiverse.

The recommended equipment?

It is simply that of the model Nano - First Person View Kit that also markets Hoverbot. For now, it is up to you to manage, since this version is temporarily no longer available. It is based on a Piko BLX 4 ESC RS 6A BLheli_S flight controller for 1S to 2S batteries, HB1103 to 8000KV brushless motors, 5.6 cm propellers, and a 5.8 GHz VM275T video camera combo . This is in the Nano - First Person View Kit version. To take off, you need to add a 2.4 GHz radio receiver, a Lipo 2S battery from 300 to 500 mAh with a red JST connector.

Additionally, if you happen need to purchase some rc drone parts, you can search via Banggood website, which is one of the wholesale platform to provide affordable prices, such as teleporter v5, fatshark raceband, etc.

Eachine Flyingfrog Q90 Review

This flying frog looks like a toy, but it displays pretty seductive features! The fully enclosed aircraft is based on a F3 flight controller, which drives brushed 8520 engines of 14000KV (slightly less than the "fast" models of Micro Motor Warehouse) for 5.5 cm propellers fed with 2S, by a Lipo 7.4V of 350 mAh in 30C with a plug Molex 2.0. The weight of the Flyingfrog Q90 without battery but with protections of propellers is 41 grams. We can expect a good power / weight ratio! The 2.4 GHz radio receiver is either DSM2, FrSky or Flysky.

And…

On the video side, the camera is a 1000TVL with a FOV of 110 ° associated with a transmitter 5.8 GHz of 40 channels and 200 mW (this is more than allowed by the European regulation). The dimensions are 8.8 x 8.8 x 4 cm for a diagonal of motor motor of 9.8 cm. The device is supplied with removable propellers. Based on technical data, it is a small machine that can prove to be nice to fly indoor, with which one can also hope to venture outdoors. The manufacturer ensures that the device is wind resistant, probably by putting forward its engines and its fairing. This will be checked, of course! Eachine Flyingfrog Q90 is offered from 66 € at Banggood (with the port but without taxes).

Additionally, if you happen need to purchase some rc drone parts, you can search via Banggood website, which is one of the wholesale platform to provide affordable prices, such as emax servo, emax red bottom, etc.

Robots on the remote control, Interactive toys for boys

The world of toys is not standing still. And if even twenty years ago, children dreamed about dolls and realistic typewriters, then malyshni generation gadgets have conquered the robots on the remote control. It should of course be noted that they are addicted to not only children but also adults - everything depends on the proposed functional, yet manufacturers are increasingly oriented to young audiences. What is he - a robot on the radio, and whether it can be something more than just a toy? Could he not only entertain, but also something to teach the child?

Automation of modern life

Let's start with the fact that now more and more space in human life belongs to the automated devices. Today, few wipes hand, if there is a washing machine, and whether you'll be unlikely to rely on sunrise or cock cries to wake up in the morning, when it is possible to have an alarm clock.

All our domestic gadgets - these are the same robots, just another level of complexity. The interactive robot has come already, and medicine (as an assistant in the operations) and in industry (construction machinery carried programmed for a specific task of devices), and in the defense industry (autonomous reconnaissance easily gather the information you need), what to speak of the various robot assistant who so actively promotes Japan - the world leader on the issue of robotics. You can not be afraid of these innovations, because progress is inevitable, and robots - an integral part of it. So, give your technophobe and still think about whether a robot on the remote control will be able to become the boys really terrific gift.

Guided and self-guided robots

Let's move on to the classification of robots. Let's start with the fact that they are managed and self-managed, in other words, subject only to the commands or make decisions for yourself. Most often the last type - a robot on the remote with the camera that captures the situation around so that artificial intelligence could make a decision. For example, appeared on the way an obstacle - controlled robot will stop in front of him, waiting for commands from the remote, while the self-governing, analyzing the situation and find a way to work around it.

Naturally, self-managed robots cost more - because they are difficult in themselves, yet the process of choosing an action plan without any inclusion of human mesmerizing.

Vantac Q100 Review

The Chinese manufacturer Kingkong is master in the art of copying machines. But for once, it is he who gets copied! Or maybe it's an exchange of good practices? Its model Q100 (see here) is also called Q100 at Vantac. What are the differences ? The Vantac version is based on a camera combo - video transmitter of 700TVL instead of 600TVL for the Kingkong version. The Vantac version is exclusively available with a Frsky receiver, while the Kingkong is available either with a DSM2 receiver, Futaba receiver or without a receiver.

So ?

The choice simply depends on the radio control you have: Vantac for a Frsky, Kingkong for a DSM2 or a Futaba. What about a Flysky? Either you choose a Kingkong version without receiver and you install yours, or you turn to this version on eBay (note that I do not know if the seller is to recommend). The Vantac Q100 is available on Banggood for around 76 € (with port but without taxes), with a red or yellow fairing.

Additionally, if you happen need to purchase some rc drone parts, you can search via Banggood website, which is one of the wholesale platform to provide affordable prices, such as FrSky S6R, Frsky X8R, etc.

Eachine DVR03, mini test

Another mini test! Why mini? Because, you will see, it was not necessary to continue testing further with this DVR03. What is DVR03? It is a camera combo - video transmitter 5.8 GHz with alluring features, which also acts as a recorder. The promise is therefore to have a video feedback in real time and to be able to record the images in HD quality.

Tour of the owner

The DVR03 is an AIO (All In One) combo larger than its competitors. It weighs 7.61 grams on the scale with its Tiny Whoop connector cable, 8.08 grams with the Molex 2.0 cable extension. And 8.35 grams with a microSD memory card. Because yes, despite its Lilliputian size, the weight of a microSD card is not negligible. It measures 3 cm in width, 4 in height counting the antenna, and 3 cm in depth counting the objective and the antenna. It is therefore not compatible with the pedestals for combos intended for the Tiny Whoop. In any case, his weight would not allow him to be placed on board these aircraft. The same applies to brushed machines such as QX90, QX95, QC90, etc. He needs a more powerful device. The lens ensures a wide angle 120 ° FOV via a 520TVL sensor.

The 5.8 GHz transmission part

The camera is coupled to a 5.8 GHz video transmitter compatible with 72 channels! Friendly. The emitter can also choose the transmitter power: 25 mW (compatible with European regulations), 50 mW and 200 mW. As well as the 0 mW, which corresponds to zero emission. This makes it possible to make adjustments without interfering with the other transmitters in operation. This was already the case with the TX03 (see the test here for more complete explanations), a very similar combo since it was the first to offer 72 channels and 4 powers. The antenna is of the polarized type, with 4 lobes (RHCP). The power supply to the camera requires 3.2 to 5.5V. A LED is used to check the settings, it indicates alternately the frequency range, the frequency, and one or more "-" symbols to indicate the transmission power. A single button on the top allows you to manage these settings.

First try

If a memory card is inserted into the DVR03, recording starts automatically when it is turned on! Practical, and a stopwatch in red indicates the duration. But the result on the screen of a 5.8 GHz video receiver, is disappointing. Frames are very clearly missing, we are far from 25 or 30 frames per second. This results in a jerky video, with blurry effects. Can not drive properly under these conditions! At the back of the camera are 3 buttons, marked C1 to C3. Pressing the C2 stops recording. The image is instantaneously more fluid, the usual quality for camera combos - transmitter 5.8 GHz, and which allows to pilot in immersion. Pressing C2 restarts the recording. And the framerate slowed down again. Too bad, because the real-time video feedback function is still the most important of this accessory! Can we drive in a "cushy" way, as for example with an ultra-stabilized machine like the Mambo of Parrot? Yes. But then pépère from home pépère ...

And recorded videos?

They are stored in avi, in MJpeg format, in a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels at 30 frames per second. Is the image beautiful? No. The compression is strong (the throughput is 16 Mbps), introducing a blur effect. There is a strong fringing effect throughout the image (not just on the edges), that is to say a halo often blue around the dark objects on a light background. There is a strong remanence that introduces a blur of motion. What's more, the image is blurry on the edges. Pfiou, that is not very engaging! Only the colors are pretty nice, with a respect of the red enough unusual to be mentioned. Note that the sound is recorded via a microphone. A long press on the C2 button allows access to menus, which can be in French. Long press C1 button to play the videos on the memory card, they are broadcast via the 5.8 GHz link.

But then ?

It was expected that this combo camera - video transmitter, which was hoped to be able both to transmit a real time image with very little latency to pilot in immersion, and to record the image on board to avoid parasites And the low resolution of videos shot with a ground recorder. But the promise is not kept. If it is used only as an FPV camera, the DVR03 works correctly. But its weight and its congestion are not justified, it is better to prefer a TX03 to him. If used with both FPV video feedback and recording, this video feedback is too mediocre to drive in immersion.
